Edw. B. Stephenson & Co., CPAs Chartered was formed on January 1, 1960, by Edward B. Stephenson as a partnership of local CPAs. Stephenson was born in Little River, Kansas in 1905. He studied at what is now known as Pittsburg State University and then later received his masters at the University of Denver. He then taught accounting and business law at Coffeyville and Douglas before moving to Winfield to teach at the high school in 1933. It was during WWII that a high demand for accounting services persuaded Stephenson to start practicing in his spare time. In 1943, he decided to step away from teaching and open up his own individual firm. Edw. B. Stephenson was at one point in time the only CPA between Wichita and Coffeyville. The first office was on the third floor of the First National Bank Building, it is now located at 1002 Main. The Montgomery Ward building was a work of the local architect, Don H. Potter, purchased by the firm in 1984. The firm has employed numerous CPAs throughout the years and is the very place many current local accountants got their start. While tailoring to all individual tax and accounting needs, we also specialize in agriculture, governmental institutions, non-profit organizations and small businesses.
